Online Workshop 4:
Teaching Sustainability in European secondary schools; Ideas and approaches
27th January - 3rd February 2025
Summary
Teachers and other educators serve as key influencers in shaping students' perspectives and behaviours towards sustainability. By bringing together the knowledge and skills to address challenging sustainability topics, such as climate change, resource depletion, and social inequality, teachers can empower their students to become active participants in creating a more sustainable and just future. A key aspect of TAP-TS project work is to support teachers to build such capabilities. Indeed, our central purpose is to support and resource teachers to engage with and teach difficult aspects of sustainability – particularly emphasising resilience and positive action.
Description
This short-course is designed to help teachers to build a better knowledge of sustainability and how teaching sustainability can be approached in a secondary learning setting. It draws from a range of TAP-TS activities and resources for engaging learners with a focus on the nature of sustainability and the question of building a sustainable Europe. Participants will become more ‘sustainability aware’ and so gain a better appreciation of the collaborative and active nature of good sustainability learning and how to enable this as a teacher. The course introduces a set of well-tested and engaging teaching resources curated or developed by TAP-TS – which will be useful to teachers setting up learning for sustainability activities in their schools.
As a participant, you should expect to:
- Learn about the characterises and features of good learning for sustainability (LfS);
- Examine the nature of a number of strong learning resources from across the subject and age range you teach;
- Consider the pedagogical and didactic variables that contribute to the personal and professional learning experiences facilitated by the resources explored during the course;
- Explore some ideas about how to capture the value of the learning experiences provided in and through the course units.
The short learning–tasks offered at the end of each unit and the final Course Award Task provide opportunities to reflect, discuss and share opinions on teaching and learning for sustainability. These will include the chance to consider the personal teaching benefits that can result from the course. They will also include opportunity to build capability in designing a meaningful learning experience for a community of learners.
