I would need more information about the size of the resort. If it's not too big, it can be a good opportunity to create jobs and income on the island.
The operation of the resort should meet ecological standards. The hotel should provide local food and buy products from local farmers.

I agree with you, having the resort's menus based on local products would even benefit more the island itself.

You're right.... much more information is needed. How does the water and energy supply work - which sources are used?
What happens with the waste water? Can it be cleaned on the island? What is thought to be done with all the waste a hotel produces? How do tourists come to the island? Which means of transport are focused / is intended to build an airport?

For eco-conscious travelers, consuming local food produced by farmers is preferable. It reduces carbon footprints and supports sustainable agriculture.

I agree that more information is needed. I like the idea of locally sourced products as this would help to positively impact on the island into the future

Having the resort be built on the island, would definitely increase jobs and the economy. But the construction of this resort, as well as having tourists constantly coming from all over the world. May disrupt the local community

I totally agree with you. The island needs to be upgraded economically, as many young people in particular have no jobs and no financial support, forcing themselves to leave their families and go to the mainland. However, a commitment should be made with the decision makers not to destroy the fauna and flora as much as possible and the hotel should be integrated into the natural environment of the island.

The integration of the resort into the natural environment of the island sounds cool to me, but I guess they could also introduce some kind of eco-friendly kind of vacation to sustain fauna and flora as well as the local economy.

This sounds like a great idea. The fact that Dragan mentioned the local flora and fauna shows how important it is to the island so it would be great to positively impact on sustaining it

I agree with you Carol, it's important for leaders of the project to organize a good program to integrate the resort into the natural environment to respect and protect the territory.

Yes, sustaining local fauna and flora is the most important issue that should be considered when building such a resort

I am worried about the longterm effects - how is this project planned? Do people only see the money and the jobs? How many inhabitants has the island - that means how many tourists can be invited to come? What do the local people think about the project?

I agree with you. It will be overcrowded and noisy, which might affect the quality of life for the local community. Prices may rise, making it harder for residents to afford living there.

Just like my partners in their previous answers, the construction of the resort in the island might contribute to local economy and give youth a chance to stay in the island. Sure government should create some eco-friendly policies regarding tourism in the island. I would add protective measures and to "force" somehow the resort to offer environmental friendly vacations for the tourists, rely on local product supply and hiring locals, among other.

Every construction negatively impacts the surrounding nature. In my home region, soil sealing is a major problem. Additionally, a large building like a resort could disrupt the aesthetics of the island landscape.
t is essential to consider that there are likely vacant properties, as many residents have left the island for work-related reasons or commute.

I agree with Pam. An unbiased environmental impact study should be carried out prior to planning permission being granted. It would also be crucial to ascertain how the hotel (if granted permission) would blend into the local landscape. Will sustainable and locally sourced building materials be used? Will construction practices minimise the use of non-renewable materials and and limit all if any damages to the local environment?

Creating a new resort on an island can have both advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, local people can find a job and collaborate in the activities of the resort but on the other hand they will see their unspoiled territory crowded by foreigners who may not respect traditions or protect the area. There will be some new opportunities but local people have to face new problems, too.

You are right, and I fear that the negative consequences could outweigh the benefits. That’s why I would argue against building a resort that is externally managed and purely profit-oriented.

I think that gentle tourism should be considered. Many regions in Europe suffer from mass tourism. In a resort, tourists stay in a local enclave with little chance to get to know the land, people, and culture. Couldn’t we consider renting out vacant houses or rooms, including bicycles, to tourists?

I agree with Karina. Overcrowding should be avoided at all costs. Sustainable tourism with long-term viability should be prioritised for the island, with or without this hotel.

I like Karina's idea too - embrace the local culture, lifestyle and contribute to the protection of the flora and fauna. The concept of a hotel can be negotiated with the locals and limited to a one or two-storey building and perhaps created as mini-villages or communities with a specific sustainability focus. Wind or water-powered facilties in some areas, other areas have solar powered features so it becomes an off-grid, back to nature experience, learn the skills of past generations who lived and worked on the island - a true vacation from life which could be a unique selling point for the resort itself.

It's difficult to add anything new that has not been stated before, either in the initial comments or in the nested replies.
It's a risky thing to allow to build a hotel in such a place, but it might be necessary. If so, they should build it ensuring it's sustainable and the new resort generates resources to help the island natural habitats.

The hotel will bring prosperity by bringing a lot of tourists that will increase the income. However, there is possibility, especially with the big resort to influence the natural environment, which will reflect on some other issues like water and electricity supplies
